Sri Lankan state TV proclaimed President Mahinda Rajapaksa the winner of the first post-war election, as his rival, former army commander General Sarath Fonseka, hunkered down in a hotel surrounded by troops.
Rajapaksa obtained more than 5 million votes compared to 3 million for his competitor.
Meanwhile, and as Sri Lanka's opposition said that poll violations took place during yesterday's election, 2 people were killed in an attack on a Buddhist temple in the center of the country.
